Chemistry professor’s memory lives on through science scholarship

A $5,000 scholarship fund has been established by Indu Sharma (second from left) and her family, in honor of her father Dr. Ram S. Jain (far right), a Tidewater Community College chemistry professor who taught at the Virginia Beach Campus for 25 years.

The Dr. Ram S. Jain Memorial Scholarship will honor Dr. Jain’s memory and his passion for science, by funding high-achieving students who have completed at least one year of their associate of applied science or associate of science at the college.

When Dr. Ram S. Jain came to TCC in 1978, he brought his passion for education with him.

“My father just knew that education was so important,” says Indu, a TCC alum and program head of the Diagnostic Sonography program. “He was constantly tutoring students here in Virginia Beach and back home in India – always teaching.”

Indu was motivated to raise funding for the scholarship in recognition of her father’s dedication to TCC. The effort was spearheaded by her colleagues in health professions Amy Shay and Kim Utley, who initiated the first meeting with the TCC Educational Foundation.

“Dad had a Ph.D., so he could’ve taught at a four-year institution. He chose to work at TCC because he loved working with students and the smaller class sizes meant he could be more student-focused. And his students really appreciated that attention. His students were always flagging us down in public — ‘Dr. Jain! Dr. Jain!’ — to chat with him and thank him for being such a great teacher.”

With the rising cost of college, establishing a scholarship also seemed like a natural choice to honor her father’s legacy and contribute to a meaningful cause. “Despite TCC’s affordable tuition, I still see a lot of financial need in the classroom. Students keep the college going. I wanted to do something for them.”

As a TCC alum herself, Indu knows the importance of education. She graduated from TCC with an associate of science in the eighties before transferring to the College of William and Mary for her bachelor’s degree. And she came back to the college for computer science course work before completing the sonography program in 1995.

After a happy career in ultrasound, she returned to TCC for the fourth time – not as a student, but as an adjunct in the department.

Seventeen years later – she still loves it here. “TCC is a great place to learn. Smaller class sizes mean that you’ll get to know your professors. The campuses are getting better and better every year. And you can get two years of college for less than the cost of a single year at a four-year school.”

“My dad was so happy when I started teaching,” she says. “He’d love this.”
